Note: This program is suitable for individuals who want to improve their people skills, find it difficult making/keeping friends and who experience social anxiety, Feeling comfortable and accepted by others is the best part about life.

Do you ever feel like people don’t understand you? Do you wish you could figure people out? Most communication is nonverbal. When we are talking our bodies are talking at the same time. When others are speaking some of us only listen to their words and do not pay attention to what their bodies are saying. We can see faces and bodies move, but our brains just don’t translate these movements into something meaningful. Eighty per cent of communicating is done automatically by our bodies. To understand what others are saying we must listen, observe and interpret their body language. Are they serious or are they making a joke?

Interpreting Body Language

“People Skills Training” is designed to teach how to interpret and use body language. Body language training is necessary to improve one’s social skills.  Our bodies are always “talking” (sending out messages) to those around us while we are speaking. However, your body language is always more important than what you say. As humans we are hardwired to interpret body language in predictable ways. Our thoughts, intentions, feelings and attitudes are expressed through physical behaviors, such as facial expressions, body posture, gestures, eye movement, touch and the use of space.

The Power of Body Language

Body Language is processed by our brains in milliseconds. Much faster than verbal communication. It is the most powerful survival skill we possess! By looking at someone from afar we can be alerted to either “stick around” or to be on guard (anxiety response, fight or flight response). Body language is more powerful than words. Incongruent body language can confuse and even cause people to react negatively to us. If you tell people something, but your body contradicts what your words are saying people believe your body language NOT your words. For example, if you look angry or bored, even if you say you are not angry, people will think you are. They will make assumptions about you based on their interpretation of your body language. This has nothing to do with general mental ability. A person can be academically intelligent, creative, and logical, yet struggle to read someone’s body language – completely different brain functions are at work.
